Looking at the month of the year associations for the different colored jewels as birthstones might be entertaining.

Galadriel has the white ring of adamant (diamond). Diamond is the April birthstone. April is the beginning of spring. Galadriel and Lothlorien are both associated with the "spring-time of the elves".

Elrond has the blue ring of sapphire. Sapphire is the September birthstone. September is the beginning of autumn. Elrond and Rivendell are associated with the "autumn of the elves".

Gandalf has the red ring of ruby. Ruby is the July birthstone. July is the month for fireworks. Gandalf has been known to dabble in the pyrotechnical arts from time to time.
