An entry in Roger Corman's Poe cycle, it's a trilogy of shorts, shot -- typically for him -- in three weeks. Lorre appeared in the "comedy" of the three segments, so yes, Price hammed it up even more than usual, but so did Lorre. All three were written by SF writer Richard Matheson, best known for his post-apocalyptic zombie/vampire novel I Am Legend.
Matheson also wrote some Twilight Zone episodes (original TZ series hosted by the inimitable Rod Serling, not the later Series) TZ episodes by Matheson
Klaus Kinski is definitely Wormtongue in my book. He had more than a little of Wormtongue to himself in real life. He was too cracked to play Gollum (who does have occasional glimpses of a good side). 😈
His daughter Pola described sexual abuse by her father in her 2013 book, while the other daughter Nastassja described him as a tyrant terrorizing the family. Their brother Nikolai has different memories, but Nastassja basically stated "I'm glad he's dead!" (Klaus Kinski was born in late 1926, died late 1991.)
And there is the Urban Legend, or more so as it is repeated in the German Wikipedia, about the 1982 film "Fitzcarraldo" directed by Werner Herzog, ultimately starring Kinski after Jason Robards had to quit for health reasons. Herzog reports the the indigenous people employed as extras to play themselves offered Herzog to kill Kinski if Herzog so wished.
Our movie really must have a (not-really-needed-but-I want-it) flashback to the First Age so Spencer Tracy can play King Thingol. I think a perfect subtitle for the Beren and Luthien story is "Guess Who's Coming to Menegroth".
