Suppose that they HAD gotten successfully through the Redhorn Gate and gone to Lorien. This would mean that neither Gandalf nor the Balrog would have died.
Would Gandalf the Grey have been able to fight off Saruman as well as the Witch King?
Also, would the Balrog's survival have created huge problems in the Fourth Age? (If the Ishtari left Middle Earth, along with the Elves, and the dwarves came back to Moria, though the orcs might be gone, the Balrog would still be around and there really wouldn't be anyone around, save Eru, and maybe Tom Bombadil, who appears not to leave his land anymore, powerful enough to stop it. Heck, it could run lose from Moria now and try and take over Middle Earth.)
Also, they wouldn't have found out what happened to Balin, though I'm not sure how this would much have affected the story, to be honest.
