Which obscure fact....

From Gandalf's spiel at "The Council of Elrond":

"...I found nothing save a few fugitives from the South; yet it seemed to me that on them sat a fear of which they would not speak."

Who are these "fugitives from the South?" Dunlendings? Rohirrim? People from Gondor?

I imagine they were Men fleeing from the areas wherever where both Sauron and Suruman were building their power — those folk coming into Bree that made the townsfolk uneasy. And to paraphrase: Dwarves could be seen travelling on the road in unusual numbers, and also Elves — travelling and not returning.

I remember that Tolkien once said ( in a letter, I think ) that he would like for others to complete and enrich his mythology, about which he himself didn't know everything... So, I would rather say that, being improbable that some new bits of information directory from Tolkien will eventually arise, I would like to know your own ideas and thought about all of these " missing moments " :)

I think it's a interesting article, good as any OPINION I've read recently, but like most things online these daze, total conjecture.

Tolkien puts out a long historical background of the Haradrim & Easterlings being bad guys for thousands of years.

We don't see a single case of mercy coming from them. Just war, war & more war.

It's like saying in 1947, "Are all Germans warmongers?"

Of course not...

But, try convincing some Russian, American, British, Belgian or French mother who's lost a husband in one war & two sons in the next one that.
