In the EE, we learn that Jackson either was not telling the truth or he didn't remember the reason for his changes of the character. It seems that it isn't the
Ring that's the problem with
Faramir, but
Daddy! (Jackson must have a thing with fathers given his
Elrond/
Arwen exposition.)
Anyway, in the EE, we see
Denethor greeting with joy his triumphant older son who has apparently won back
Osgiliath from the forces of the enemy - whose original capture of the ruined
city is something which Faramir "allowed to happen" according to Daddy.
Boromir appears to dislike his father and sides with his brother whom Denethor treats with open scorn. Denethor also sends Boromir to the council that "Elrond has called" with orders to bring
the Ring to
Gondor (apparently, he has guessed that it has been found for whatever reason!). So it is not the
Ring or its lure that motivates Faramir, but the desire to get into the good graces of his very unpleasant (and certainly nothing like I would have imagined physically or otherwise) father Denethor.
Thus Jackson's revelation that he changed Faramir in an attempt to display the power of the Ring is, guess what? Wrong!!
Oh, and p.s., in the EE, we see Faramir's bully boys beating and kicking
Gollum. No wonder the little creep was angry with
Frodo who, during this scene of disgusting brutality (frankly, Gondor's
Rangers aren't much better than
Saruman's
orcs!) instead of entreating of their captors better treatment for his "servant" was busy elsewhere in the cave succumbing once again to the power of the Ring. Jackson has Frodo saying to
Sam that "I can't do this!" Given how he is being portrayed, that's the most honest thing that Jackson has filmed to date!
