The infinite monkey theorem states that an infinite number of monkeys typing randomly on typewriters for an infinite amount of time will almost surely produce any given text, such as the complete works of William Shakespeare. It is a probability concept demonstrating that, given infinite time and resources, any event with a non-zero probability will eventually occur.

Some guy made a website that's trying to complete this. Apparently it's done all 5-letter words in Shakespeare's works, so far...and you can click on the monkeys to see what they've done and are doing!

I was just thinking hot fortunate it is that Tolkien Forums here was 'rescued' from the decay of time. The sad news I have is another of the last remaining legacy sites from the turn of the century has fallen into the abyss... The Barrow Downs.

I found The Barrow Downs on the old EZ Board platform that was popular back then, and though I may have had 700 posts in 26 years, it was always a good site that wasn't overrun by the PJ movie hordes back in the day simply because Peter didn't make mention of The Barrow Downs in his movie. The site changed little over the decades, and despite having nominal upgrades with the last one about ten years ago, it managed to motor on mainly due to one guy who had the wood glue bottle to fix up the broken things that came along. Well, a couple weeks ago, their server disappeared. Gone. Poof. Today Mithadan posted the obituary on the Facebook group that The Barrow Downs had passed from wraithdom to completely dead. A lot of good discussions are now gone or pale ghosts of themselves with whatever the Wayback machine managed to capture.

On a slightly more positive note, the Arwen Undomiel forum which has been around since 2004 but had been completely overrun by the spambots the last five years has has had ALL the spam cleared out. I noted that Arwen Webmaster (Anna) had read my DM there (Sent messages remain in the 'outbox' folder until read, then they go to the 'sent' folder) and every one of their posts and accounts were wiped clean. Not sure if there will be any sort of revival/resurrection there, but the funny thing was I have been going there periodically over the spambot invasion years and posting crap about them. However the posts and accounts got wiped, it left all my posts up, so I appear to be a raving looney. 😆
