Born in First Age 339, Adanel was a wise woman belonging to the House of Marach. She was the eldest child and the daughter of Zimrahin Meldis and Malach Aradan, and the granddaughter of Marach. She was married to Belemir and had a son named Beren, and her great-grandson was Beren Erchamion, a renowned hero in Middle-Earth.

Biography

It is said that Adanel had married Belemir of the House of Beor. He was the great-grandson of Beor the Old. She had many other younger brothers and sisters. She also had five children, with Beren being her last and fifth child. Beren eventually became the grandfather of Beren the One-Handed after whom his daughter Emeldir was named. Thus, Adanel was the great-grandmother of Emeldir. The only people to keep the tale of their sin were the Wise of the People of Marach. They, after their awakening, selected Eru for worship instead of Melkor. Adanel had narrated this tale to Andreth, her niece. Andreth was from the House of Beor and a distant niece of Belemir, her husband. Andreth’s nephew Barahir had married Adanel’s granddaughter Emeldir.

Etymology

Adanel is a Sindarin name with a not-so-clear meaning. It seems to have originated from the phrases ā€˜adan’ that means ā€˜man’ and ā€˜el’ meaning star. This would give the meaning ā€˜star of man’ to her name.

Other Versions of The Legendarium

Hador was the original leader to take the people of the Edain into Beleriand. He was the brother of Adanel. Upon changing the genealogy, Marach became the first leader and Adanel, the great aunt of Hador. There are two versions of the genealogy of the House of Hador. The first version refers to Beren, the son of Adanel and Belemir as their fifth child. Another version has no detail of any other children. This version only talks about Beren though they might have had other children. [1]
