Amon Anwar

Amon Anwar was originally known as Eilenaer and afterwards Halifirien in Rohirric. It was generally known as the geographical center of Gondor until TA 2510, since it was the highest point closest to the center of a line from the Limlight down to the southern cape of Tolfalas, and the distance was the same as the distance from the Fords Of Isen, to Minas Tirith.

History

Tomb of Elendil

After the War of the Last Alliance, Isildur set the borders of Gondor, and having discovered it was the center of Gondor, he buried his father Elendil, in a tomb on the summit. It was at this time that the hill was renamed Amon Anwar, because Isildur had called the protection of the Valar on the hill, and they had consented to his request. Isildur swore all present to secrecy and forbade anyone save an Heir of Elendil from disturbing it. The tomb then stayed untouched by any save the Kings of Gondor and after they had ended, their Stewards.

Oath of Eorl

During the reign of Cirion, the twelfth ruling Steward, Gondor was threatened by a massive invasion. Cirion begged the Éothéod for aid, and in return for their aid at the Battle of the Field of Celebrant, he surrendered Calenardhon to them, until the King should return.

Cirion led Eorl to the tomb of Elendil, and there they swore the Oath Of Eorl, and promised friendship between the two peoples. Because Amon Anwar was no longer the center of Gondor, Cirion removed the casket containing Elendil's remains, and placed it in Rath Dinen, in Minas Tirith

Warning beacon

Later, Amon Anwar became the seventh and last of the Warning beacons of Gondor that would be used to summon Rohan in the event of an invasion of Gondor. A chain of Warning Beacons was established along the line of the White Mountains to warn Minas Tirith of danger in Calenardhon, and vice-versa. The westernmost and last beacon to be built was situated upon Amon Anwar, and was only created after the Tomb of Elendil was removed to Rath Dínen.

Even after Elendil was removed to Minas Tirith, the Beacon-wardens would live close to the summit only for short watches in specially constructed cabins. Except when there was a noise of animals in the forest, or of folk along the road, they would find themselves speaking to their companions in whispers. The mound of Elendil's Tomb remained upon the top of the hill from the time that Isildur hallowed it until the Changing of the World, always in a well-kept, green field.
