Eomer was an independent and heroic Rohirrim. He was also known as Marshal of the Mark and became King of Rohan. His enemies were Uruk-hai and the Orcs of Mordor. Uruk-hai (also known as Uruks) was a cruel and fierce orc. The orcs were the front lines of the Dark Lord. They were numerous but not well-trained at war. Merry and Pippin were also part of this story. Merry (also known as Meriadoc Brandybuck) was part of the Fellowship of the Ring. He was a relative and friend of Frodo Baggins. Pippin (also known as Peregrin Took) was also a close friend of Baggins. All of them were from the place of halflings or hobbits − Shire.
Background
Eomer's military troops were in exile. Meanwhile, at Amon Hen, Isengard Uruk-hai, together with the Orcs of Mordor, combined their forces to seize the two halflings [1] − Merry Brandybuck and Pippin Took. Eomer's troops encountered and fought with them at Fangorn's forest border. Everybody had no idea that Merry and Pippin were still alive. They were safe and hiding at Fangorn Forest.
The Two Halflings − Merry and Pippin
There was a fight between Aragorn's group (Fellowship of the Ring) and their enemies, the Orcs. Boromir tried to save the two halflings; Merry and Pippin. However, the orcs were numerous, so Boromir died. Merry and Pippin cannot believe everything they saw. The orcs captured the two halflings and left the place immediately.
Merry and Pippin with the Orcs
Ugluk, together with Grishnakh and Moria Orcs, [2] also known as Northerners, argued on what to do with Merry and Pippin. The former desired to look after the two hobbits while the latter wanted them dead. There was no unity at them, so their movement got delayed. Due to this, Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli almost reached them. Meanwhile, a Rohirrim noticed that an orc was roaming around their vicinity. He discussed with Eomer that their enemies were moving to Eastemnet for Isengard. Due to this, Eomer pursued the orcs without King Theoden's blessing. Ugluk and Grishnakh had a difference in opinion on who would look after Merry and Pippin. Despite the argument, all the orcs (Mordor, Moria, and 40 Isengards) listened to Ugluk, and he led them to battle.
The Battle with the Orcs
The troop of orcs was finally in unity! Grishnakh discerned that the horsemen of Eomer were coming for them. His united group tried to move faster to escape the horsemen. Their enemy started to attack until evening. The style of Eomer was effective. The orcs run into different directions as fast as they can. Eventually, they got exhausted, slowed down, and got killed. As the battle continued, the orcs decided to rest near a hill at nighttime, near Fangorn forest. While at rest, their enemies encircled the camp. Since they were unprepared, only three of them survived. The rest died.
The Death of Grishnakh
Ugluk firmly gave a command to three Isengarders, that they must not abandon the two halflings no matter what happened. They should keep them safe unless their lives were in danger. Unfortunately, their enemies already attacked other orcs! Grishnakh tried his best to flee with the two halflings but failed. Finally, Merry and Pippin were free!
The Battle Continued
The orcs found out that Merry and Pippin were gone. Mauhur, from Fangorn and his Isengarders group, tried to pass-through Rohirrim troops in search of the hobbits. However, they failed. The battle continued until it was dark. The horsemen moved around the small mountain while pursuing the orcs with arrows. Ugluk troops proceeded to the forest while fighting with around three men. The orcs killed several of them; however, they lost most of their men. Merry and Pippin run to Fangorn forest after they see everything. Finally, Ugluk and Eomer fought with each other. The horsemen pursued all the orcs who tried to run away.
The Battle Aftermath
Even though the horsemen won the battle, fifteen of their courageous men died. They offered a touching and warm song in honor of their bravery. They gathered around a heap and placed fifteen weapons (spears) around it. After this, they burned the orcs dead bodies and threw away their ashes. Meanwhile, Merry and Pippin reached Fangorn Forest and saw a Treebeard. Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli continued their search for Merry and Pippin and saw Eomer Eored. The latter shared with the group the details of the battle story with the orcs. Aragorn and his group had no horses with them, so Eomer gave the horses Hasufel and Arod to Aragorn and Legolas. Aragorn and the group continued to search for the hobbits. Aragorn had a strong feeling that the halflings were still alive, so they proceeded to the forest. They were surprised! They had no idea that Gandalf was at Fangorn Forest. Everybody was happy to see each other again.
