These fights that took place in the Fords of Isen, were between the armies of Isengard, and Rohan, which happened at Fords of Isen. It was during the time that the War of the Ring was taking place.

The First Battle of the Fords of Isen

The main hindrance preventing Saruman from taking up Rohan quickly, was Saruman wanted to take up Rohan quickly. He was hindered from achieving this by two resilient and relentless men who were skilled at war. That was Theoden's son Theodred and Eomer, his cousin. Saruman resolved that to get what he wanted, he had to kill them. That is why he targeted the Fords of Isen for the battles. This was a strategic spot for the armies of Rohan to cross the Isen River. The Riders were led to victory under Prince Theodred's command. However, after they were done fighting, the Rohirrim could see by the events that transpired that Saruman intended for his men to take out Prince Theoden. If the intention was to defeat Rohirrim, Isengard would have won that day.

They would also have taken over Westfold and wiped out the army coming at them from Edoras before getting to Helm's Deep to back up the small army that was stationed there in a garrison. Gandalf would also not have appeared in Endora's, and Isengard would have won the war. Theodred got wind that the troops of Isengard were getting ready for battle. So he had a cavalry of three companies remaining on the shores to the east. He went to confront Saruman's army with eight companies, plus an additional company comprising bowmen. He did not know that Saruman's army was already expecting him and his battalion in the South, ready to attack. The Prince made good use of an army of Orcs around twenty miles the northern side of the Fords.

He then proceeded to go and fight the main army, having no idea that they were waiting for him. When he suddenly found himself face to face with them, he made it as if to turn back but found himself boxed in by more of Isengard's army pouring in from the western side. Theodred's companies that were right after him were able to take down the army that was coming at him from the back. But, from across the river, the Rohan's crown Prince could see more of Isengard's armies heading to the Fords from the South. So he ordered his army to go back to the Fords. But the Orcs were hot on their heels. And so they took up the troops from strategic points, with Grimbold taking command on the shore from the west. Theodred then took charge of a position that would protect Grimbold in case he needed to retreat, at a small hillock on the eyot at the center of the river.

At the same time, the Rohirrim were getting attacked on the eastern shore by Wargs, then two Orc battalions. They were quickly wiped out as they were not prepared. The surviving of Theodred's troops retreated fleeing southwards of the Isen as they were being pursued by Orcs. After the Orcs had victory over the eastern end of the shore, they sent a part of their army equipped with axes to ambush the small hill from which Theodred had taken command. As fate would have it, the western shore where Grimhold was in command, was also attacked.

Theodred and the army that was with him were now surrounded by Dunlendings, who were moving towards them. Grimbold heard their cries for help and went to their aid with some of his company. He was able to fight through the Orcs but arrived to see Theodred getting struck down by a large Orc. Grimbold slew that Orc as more orcs pressed home their attack and likely would have been slain himself had not Elfhelm leading his cavalry come to his aid. Their arrival from the east startled Isengard's armies as they appeared from the horizon when the sun was rising. It gave the illusion of the arrival of a great army and the terrified the orcs took to their heels and ran. Elfhelm pursued after them and the Orcs who remained standing their ground all were slain.

At Elfhelm's orders, the two companies that remained guarded the eastern shore, and with his guard took charge to help Grimbold to fight at the eyot. The Dunlendings were soon repulsed as the attacks were being made against them from both sides. Elfhelm then quickly made his way up the hillock where Grimbold was up in arms protecting Theodred's wounded body. He rescued Grimbold. That is when Theodred said his last words that were a request for him to lie there and guard the Fords until Eomer arrived. He then breathed his last. With the night fast approaching, the Orcs that were set to take the western shore drew back. The following morning, Theodred's armies that were pursued by the first Orc army returned, reporting to the rest of the Rohirrim that the Orcs had fled like had been witnessed on the Fords western shores.

The Second Battle of the Fords of Isen

Erkenbrand, who commanded the Westfold, was given command of the Ford of Isen's garrison. Grimbold took command until he arrived from Helm's Deep. When the attacks began, Grimbold was forced to retreat as the losses bore hard on him. He decided to take a stand on Ford's eastern side as he waited for Elhelm to come and help him. By this time, Grimbold was facing more than half of the enemies' forces (Saruman) from the position he held. There was a gap that separated the two Rohirrim companies, which the Warg Riders and those that followed them tried to use to surround Elfhelm. He was forced to back away eastwards, even though he was aware of the danger Grimbold was in.

To his dismay, Grimbold saw torches approaching him from Isengard and the northern side. They were the leaders of more of Saruman's forces that were sent to fight them. They soon quickly crossed the Ford. He could not defend the Ford, so he retreated to the camp and created a defensive shield-wall around it. This prevented the surrounding forces of Isengard from breaking through, but Grimbold knew that he could not hold out for too long. With problems of their own, neither Elfhem nor Erkenbrand was able relieve him, so he worked on a plan to escape. For all the horses he had, he put riders on them, and through a gap that was made on the wall's east side, the riders made their way out. They were able to form two small groups and attack from the northern and the southern side at the same time. In the confusion that followed, the rest of the Rohirrim slipped away on foot as quickly as they could under the cover of darkness. The lack of visibility turned out well for them. Having made a way of getting supplies into Rohan, Saruman's command had dealt with his number one concern and was now focused on the next point of the Rohirrim's defense ... the Hornbug.
