Bregalad

Bregalad, often called Quickbeam, was an Ent living in the Fangorn Forest. The ents were tree-like creatures who largely resembled the trees they herded. [1]

Biography

Bregalad, who belonged to the same race as Skinbark, lived on the mountains in the western part of Isengard. As his name suggests, he was an ent well known for his hasty approach towards situations. During the War of the Ring, the forests he was living in were demolished by the Orcs. So Bregalad made an ent-house near Derndingle in Fangorn as his home. The Ent Bregalad was much younger than other ents likeTreebeard and was responsible for protecting the Rowan trees of Fangorn. He resembled a Rowan tree himself. During the Entmoot held between February 30 to March 2, 3019, Bregalad proposed an attack on Isengard. He was frustrated by the act of the Orcs of Saruman, who destroyed his Rowan groves. However, the eldest of the ents, Treebeard, sent him to take care of the two members of the Fellowship of the Ring, Meriadoc Brandybuck, and Peregrin Took. They sought the ents' help after escaping from Saruman.

Meanwhile, the other ents continued their discussions about Saruman. He befriended the hobbits and had a great time filled with songs and laughter at his ent house. Bregalad played a significant role in the Last March of the Ents. The ents under the leadership of Treebeard launched an attack on Isengard. Bregalad single-handedly captured Saruman. When the dam walls of Isengard were destroyed and Saruman's lands flooded, he took over the impenetrable tower Orthanc inside, which trapped Saruman the White. Bregalad's life after the War of the Ring remains a mystery. King Elessar presented Nan Curunir to the ents as a sign of gratitude. All the ents, including Bregalad, deported their trees to their new home, the Treegarth of Orthanc. Hence Nan Curunir began to be also called the Watchwood of Orthanc.

Ha, hmm, my friends, let us go for a walk! I am Bregalad, that is Quickbeam in your language. But it is only a nickname, of course. They have called me that ever since I said yes to an elder Ent before he had finished his question. Also, I drink quickly and go out while some are still wetting their beards. Come with me! [2]
