Bandobras Took, a hobbit well known for his large stature and the protagonist of the Battle of Greenfields, was born in TA 2704.
Biography
Bandobras Took, also called the Bullroarer, was the second son of Thain Isumbras III. He was the first of the hobbits of the Shire who was able to ride a horse. He held the record as the tallest hobbit in the Shire history and measured four feet, five inches. This record was later broken by Meriadoc Brandybuck and Peregrin Took. Bandobras Took had a brother named Ferumbras II. [1] He became a legend for his heroic deeds at the Battle of Greenfields in TA 2747. He led the hobbits from the front during the invasion of North Farthing by the Goblins from Mount Gram in the Misty Mountains. [2] During the war, Bandobras fought the goblins' soldiers with a wooden club. He beheaded the goblin chieftain Golfimbul with his exceptional club fighting skills. The Golfimbul’s head ended up in a rabbit hole after traveling through the air a hundred yards. Thus, Bandobras helped the hobbits win the battle of Greenfields.
Bandobras' slaying act with the club led to the invention of the game of golf in Middle-Earth. The victory at the Battle of Greenfield was celebrated as Bullroarer Took Day by the Shire every spring. It is said that besides golf, Bandobras also invented fence walking. Bandobras was the great-great-grand-uncle of Bilbo Baggins, who died in TA 2806 at the age of 102. Bandobras’s descendants, called the North-Tooks of Long Cleeve, hung a portrait of him with a sword raised and standing triumphantly over a wolf’s corpse at Bag End. The most notable Took was Diamond, the wife of Peregrin Took. Bandobras was long talked about as a hero of valor for his role at the Battle of Greenfields. While some of his descendants, like Gandalf, considered it an act of heroism, a few others like Bilbo qualified it as just an embellishment.
