Carcharoth, one of the most powerful werewolves of Middle Earth, was a descendant of Draugluin. Draugluin was the lord and sire of all the werewolves of Beleriand. Often referred to as The Red Maw, Carcharoth lived in the First Age of the Sun.
Just a while before their arrival, Carcharoth had heard about the death of Draugluin. But before he could ward off the enemies, he was sent into a deep sleep by Lúthien's enchanting magic. However, he was awake on their way out of Angband and attacked them before being enchanted again. Beren held out the Silmaril from Morgoth's crown to avert the werewolf with the radiance of the great Jewel. But it didn't work in his favor. Instead, the undaunted Carcharoth bit off the hand of Beren, and swallowed the Silmaril along with Beren's hand. However, the light from the Silmaril burnt the interiors of Carcharoth. The powerful werewolf was aggravated by the pain and became furious. He ventured out of Angband filled with rage and pain. Considered a severe threat to Eldar, Men, and Orcs alike, he destroyed anything that came in his way.
Exploding with fury and filled with savage emotions, he ravaged the lands towards Doriath. The kingdom of Doriath was in grave danger as he passed through the Girdle of Melian aided by the immense power of the Silmaril engulfed in him. Beren Erchamion, Elu Thingol, Beleg Cúthalion, and Mablung joined forces with Huan, the Hound of Valinor, to save Doriath from the werewolf. [2]This incident was called The Hunting of the Wolf. Eventually, Carcharoth was slain by Huan in FA 466 near the river Esgalduin. After the werewolf's death, Malbung slit opened its belly to find the Silmaril held by Beren's hand. The flesh was blown away by the wind when grabbed, leaving the Silmaril behind. The fatal poison in the tooth of the werewolf wounded Huan and Beren. Both Huan and Beren died of the werewolf's poison. However, Beren later reappeared because of his wife Luthien's plea to Mondos.
History
Carcharoth was created by Morgoth, the Dark Lord, to kill Huan after the Fall of Tol-in-Gaurhoth. Morgoth wanted to avenge the defeat of Draugluin and Sauron. Carcharoth, was fed living flesh by Morgoth, this foul diet made him grow enormous and acquire superior strength. He had red eyes that looked like burning fire, and poison in his teeth similar to that of the Orcs spears, and he belched smoke. He guarded the gate of Angband, and none could surpass his physical strength. He lay awake before the entrance of Angband which was protected by great walls and the gorges on either side of the road where filled with serpents. [1] Carcharoth played a role in the Quest for the Silmaril. He was serving as the guard when Beren and Lúthien tried to enter the fortress of Angband to obtain the Silmaril.
