Carn Dûm

Carn Dûm, located in the northwestern part of the Misty Mountains, was the capital of Angmar. This fortress near Mount Gundabad was the residential center of Witch-King of Angmar for several epochs in the Third Age. [1]

Carn Dûm was found in the western region of the mountain range in the North of MiddleEarth. It was established as the Witch-King capital around TA 1300. It was populated with Orcs, the Men of Darkness, and other evil creatures. [2] From this mountain fortress, the Witch-King launched attacks on Rhudaur, Cardolan, and Arthedain in the early Third Age and destroyed the Men of these three realms ofArnor. In TA 1356, joining forces with evil men from Rhudaur, Witch-king of Carn Dûm sent forces and killed Argeleb, the seventh King of Arthedain. The invasion of Arnor took place in T.A. 1409, and the last prince of Cardolan was slain. The Tower of Amon Sûly was destroyed, Rhudaur seized, and Cardolan ravaged. In 1974, a great battle was fought by Gondor, Lindon, and Arnor's armies against Angmar. The Gondorians and other soldiers crossed the river Lune to reach the plains amidst Lake Evendim and the North Downs. The Battle of Fornost in 1975 brought the fall of Arthedain while the Witch-king along with his army fled northwards. From the south ofRivendell, these fleeing soldiers were routed by Earnur's army of Gondor and the forces of Glorfindel, Lord of the House of the Golden Flower. However, these withdrawing forces sought refuge in Carn Dûm.

In TA 1975, Angmar was attacked by the Lindon Elves, remnants of Arnor, and the Dúnedain of Gondor, under the leadership of Eärnur. The Witch-King fled and Carn Dûm was utterly devastated. Some Orcs who sustained the battles lasted there until the War fought between the two races, Dwarves and Orcs. These remaining forces were later destroyed by Aragorn II, King Elessar of Arnor. In September of 2018, when Merry was rescued by Tom Bombadil from the Barrow he was trapped in with Frodo, he recalled the Barrow-Wight dream. He dreamt of being attacked by Carn Dûm's Men, and his heart pierced by a spear. This dream was a recount of the Barrow's happenings, which was also the grave of the last prince of Cardolan.
In 2480 when the Orcs were building secret strongholds in the Misty Mountains, Carn Dûm might have been reoccupied. [3]

Carn Dûm is part of the Witch King's empire. It is initially a ruined fortress of Morgoth, later renovated by the Witch King by building Carn Dûm. This consolidated empire of Angmar was once besieged by Glorfindel.

Agandaûr, Sauron's Lieutenant and a descendant of the Black Númenóreans, uses Carn Dûm as a stronghold for his conquest of the North of Middle-earth. In the game's final level, the heroes need to infiltrate the fortress to conquer and destroy Agandaûr. Carn Dûm became the new stronghold of Urgost after Agandaûr's collapse.

Carn Dûm was the capital of Witch-king steward Mordirith, also referred to as the false King. The False King, who was spreading hostility in the North, was defeated in TA 3018.
