Gundabad lay at the northern end of the Hithaeglir (Misty Mountains), and was the site of a dwarven city, which later became an orc-stronghold.
History
Dwarves of Durin's Folk, including Durin the Deathless, oldest of the Fathers of the Dwarves, awoke at Mount Gundabad, after the Awakening of the Elves.
During the middle of the Second Age, orcs conquered the mountain. The dwarves did not free the mountain until very late in the Second Age, this may have happened shortly after the fall of Sauron.
However, orcs once again claimed it in the Third Age. Even after the fall of Angmar, Gundabad remained under the control of the orcs, until it was once more retaken during the War of the Dwarves and Orcs. Before the events of The Hobbit, the orcs managed to retake it again. The goblin army present at The Battle Of Five Armies, marched from the mountain, led by Bolg, Azog's son.
