Fallohides

The Fallohides are one of the three breeds of Hobbits, and the least numerous.[1] (The Harfoots and Stoors are the other two.)

Background

About 1150 of the Third Age,[2] the Fallohides left their ancestral home on the upper Anduin, crossed the Misty Mountains north of Rivendell, and came down the River Hoarwell, entering Eriador. There they mingled with the other kinds who had preceded them.

In 1601 of the Third Age, brothers Marco and Blanco (Fallohides), set out from Bree with a large group of Hobbits, crossed the Baranduin (called the Brandywine by the Hobbits) and crossed the Bridge of Stonebows, built in the days of the power of the North Kingdom, taking possession of all the land beyond to dwell in by permission of the high king at Fornost.

Thus began the age of the Shire-reckoning, the year of crossing the Brandywine becoming Year One of the Shire, and it is at this time that “legend” among the Hobbits first becomes “history”, with a reckoning of years.

Character Traits

The Fallohides were a northerly branch, more friendly with Elves than the other Hobbits, and had more skill in language and song than in handicrafts. They were lovers of trees and woodlands, and of old they preferred hunting to tilling.

Being somewhat bolder and more adventurous than the others, they were often leaders of other tribes of Hobbits. The Tooks, Brandybucks, and Bolgers were Fallohides, and Bilbo and Frodo Baggins also had a measure of Fallohide blood. In their time the strong Fallohide strain was still seen among the greater families like the Tooks and masters of Buckland.

No Fallohide had any trace of a beard. They also maintained a custom of giving high-sounding first names, most drawn from legends of Men and Hobbits of the past.[3]
