Also known as Wandlimb, Fimbrethil was Treebeard’s
entwife who once lived in the
Fangorn forest.
Etymology
Fimbrethil is a
Sindarin name consisting of two words - fim and brethil. Loose translations given by J.R.R Tolkein states that the name means “slender beech”, “slim birch” or “slender princess”.
History
During her younger days, Fimbrethil was extremely beautiful and light-footed. As years went by, Fimbrethil grew old, her silhouette dropped but Treebeard still loved her the same. The couple’s love
dates back to the time before even
Morgoth arose to power. During the
Second Age when
Sauron’s forces destroyed the Fangorn forest, Fimbrethil went missing along with all the other
Entwives. At the time of the
War of The Ring, Treebeard had not seen Fimbrethil for over 3,000 years. Many years later, Treebeard went in search of the Entwives but they could not be found in the place they originally settled. The place where Fimbrethil was supposed to settle came to be known as
the Brown Lands, which later got destroyed by the
War of The Last Alliance. It is still unknown as to what became of the Entwives. The war may have killed them or they may have settled in gardens in the far East. During
the Third Age, when the Treebeards and his
Ents were attacking
Isengard, Treebeard had a feeling that they were marching towards their doom and he may never be able to see Fimbrethil again. Although he talks to
Merry and
Pippin about how he would have loved to see Fimbrethil for one last time.
