Portrayal In Adaptations
The Hobbit Film Trilogy
In the Third Age 2941, Azog the Defiler hired Fimbul and Yazneg to chase down Thorin Oakenshield and his band of Dwarves when they were in Quest of Erebor. After they found the group resting out at the Lone Lands, Yazneg directed Fimbul to send a message to their master that they had located the enemy. Yazneg has been accompanied by Fimbul with several Gundabad Wargs and Orcs to attack Thorin’s group but Radagast the Brown was able to lead in astray by using his rabbit to pull the sled, acting as a distraction for the Dwarves. However, an Orc caught the group because of their scent, but the Orc got killed. While the Dwarves hid in a small crevice, Yazneg and Fimbul detected them and proceeded to attack until Elrond with his Elven warriors came and killed many of the foes. However, the two Orcs survived and ran for their lives. Other Gundabad Hunter Orcs set up a base at the Weathertop.
Fimbul and Yazneg arrived and planned to report to their master Azog the escape of the Dwarves. Upon Yazneg’s failures, Fimbul watched in fear when Azog threw Yazneg to the wargs and died. Fimbul took over Yazneg and became Azog’s second-in-command and right hand, and journeyed with his master’s side to lead the search for Thorin and his band. The Dwarves managed to have a narrow escape from the Goblin Town after the Orcs caught them, and they were forced to climb the trees that surround them to escape from the ferocious Wargs.
Soon enough, when Thorin had been severely wounded by Azog, the former was immediately rescued by Bilbo Baggins. However, Fimbul and several hunter Orcs surrounded them, and upon Azog’s order, they attempted to kill the small Hobbit but were eventually stopped when the Eagles arrived who proceeded to kill countless Wargs and Orcs present before rescuing the outnumbered and stranded Dwarves with Bilbo and Gandalf the Grey. Fimbul, however, survived the attack of the Eagles and was last seen at the flank of Azog as he screamed out of anger because his plans were severed and thwarted by Durin’s bloodline. In the Hobbit; The Desolation of Smaug, while attempting to capture Thorin Oakenshield and his band, Fimbul followed Azog to the house of Beorn, but Azog was forced to retreat because of Beorn’s presence. Bolg, his son, arrived on the same evening, with a message to return to Dol Guldur.
Shortly, Fimbul joined Bolg as a lieutenant next to Narzug since Bolg carried the mission to chase down the group. Fimbul followed Bolg to the Lake-Town, wherein Tauriel, Legolas, and Bard’s family were attacked by the Bolg’s party. While Fimbul stayed on the boat outside the house, an Orc ran and jumped into the boat, hurling him up to the door where Legolas killed and beheaded him, who was then pursuing Bolg and his Orcs who were escaping. Bolg is Azog’s son, and he is a resentful Orc Chieftain. He then succeeded his father as well-known Orc leader when Azog got killed in TA 2799. In the Hobbit film, the Orcs continue and never stop searching for the Dwarves, where Fimbul dips his finger to the ground with a pool of blood and tastes it, saying in disgust, “Dwarf blood!”. It was in the adaptation of the film The Two Towers, where Gimli also dips his fingers to a drop of blood left on the leaves and tastes it, and spits it in disgust saying, “Orc blood!”.

Behind the Scenes
- Fimbul was portrayed by Stephen Ure in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey [1] and The Desolation of Smaug. [2] Goblin Grinnah, in the first film, also was portrayed.
- Peter Jackson also worked with Ure, in the films of Lord of the Rings trilogy as two different Orcs: The Orc who took Frodo in Cirith Ungol and Grishnakh, the Orc, who tried to slay Pippin, Merry, and Gorbag.
- In Norse mythology, Fimbul means “terrible”. Theoretically, this is based on Tolkien, the orc Golfimbul’s name, and shortened it to the name Fimbul.
- Another is that Fimbul’s name may also mean “great” or “mighty” from an Old Norse Language.
- In a Video game of The Hobbit, Fimbul appeared to be playful and have a cool character. There was a scene in which Yazneg ordered Fimbul to call Aznog that they found out about the company of Thorin. Fimbull grabs the telephone to tip Azog. (LEGO).
Appearances
- The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (first appearance)
