A close friend of Frodo, Fredegar Bolger, was one of the hobbits of the Shire. He was amongst the few people who knew that the One Ring was in possession of Frodo and helped him on his mission to leave the Shire.

Etymology

The name Fredegar consists of two parts - "Ferdi," which means peace and "gar," which stands for a spear.

History

Also known as "fatty," Fredegar Bolger was a part of the small group of Hobbit, which consisted of Folco Boffin, Sam, Merry, and Pippin, all being Frodo Baggins's close friends. They knew Frodo was on an important mission to leave the Shire to escape some danger related to the One Ring. Hence, they conspired to help him without his knowledge by spying on his daily activities and conversations. They moved things from his previous house in Bag Ends to his new house, in order to keep the place ready for him to live. Before Frodo set out to take the One Ring to Rivendell, they revealed themselves to Frodo and expressed their will to follow him in the mission. They also confessed to him that they knew about the existence of the One Ring, and the Ring was the reason he was fleeing the Shire. They wanted to join him, and thus Fredegrar had kept everything prepared for their departure, right from all the provisions to the ponies. However, being the typical Hobbit that he was, Fredegrar had never left the Shire. He was terrified of the stories the nurses had told him about the Old Forest. So he decided he would stay back and deal with people's curious questions related to Frodo. He would wear Frodo's clothes and pretend that Frodo was still living in the Shire. Before leaving, the others in the group gave him an option to flee along with them, but he refused due to the fear of Black Riders and the Old Forest. He opted to stay back to lure Nazguls and be a messenger for Gandalf if he came there. [1]

Much to Fatty's terror, the Nazguls eventually came to Crickhollow on the night of 30th September. He ran for his life and escaped them by raising the emergency alarm of Buckland, calling the Hobbits of Buckland [2] to take action against invaders into their land. This caused the Nazguls to flee, but by then, they had learned that the Ring was gone from the land. During Saruman's rule of the Shire, Fatty led a group of members who were battling against the Ruffians. Eventually, he was captured in the battle and imprisoned along with his sons in the storage tunnels of Lockholes. He was starved there, which meant he could no longer be called "fatty." He was later released following the victory at the Battle of Bywater.
