Gollum's Lake was the name given to the creek flowing through the caverns where Gollum, a wretched hobbit, resided since TA 2470.
Description
Gollum lake was wide, deep, filled with icy cold water with fish floating around. It was formed by the water seeping through the rocks inside the Misty Mountains. A tiny island sat at the center of the Lake, the residing area for Gollum to protect himself from the Goblins hovering around. The Lake was Gollum's camping place for several hundred years during the Third Age. The Goblins never ventured into the Lake as they thought it was an unpleasant attempt. An underground stream was an access point to the outside.
History
Gollum, who lived in the Lake for years, devoured the fish living there, which became his staple food. His magic ring and few other belongings were conserved there. He used a small self-made boat to row around the Lake and to catch his meal. The Goblins were unaware of his stay there. [1] Any goblins who visited the Lake for fish upon the Great Goblin's orders were gobbled by Gollum. The Lake was well known among the goblins for years. However, it was the terminus of the goblin road. In TA 2941, when Bilbo had lost his way and his fellow travelers, he had stumbled upon the Lake. [2]
Portrayal In Adaptations
The first mention of the Lake is in the chapter "Riddles in the Dark" part of the novel The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. Gollum Lake is considered significant as it is the place where Gollum and Bilbo meet during Bilbo's mission to find the lost One Ring. When they meet, they play a game of riddles. Bilbo poses a question to Gollum, asking him what he possessed in his pocket. It is then Gollum finds out about his missing Ring, which was with Bilbo. [3]
