One of the several inns in the Shire, the Green Dragon was a building closest to the Hobbiton on the Bywater. It was situated about a mile south of the bridge that went over the Bywater. [1] Due to its close location, Hobbits from both villages were seen at the inn frequently.
History
In the Third Age, Thorin Oakansheild leaves a letter for Bilbo Baggins after the Unexpected Party. Until Bilbo finds the letter, he is left with only 10 minutes to reach the Lonely Mountain at the Green Dragon inn, the location of the start of the quest. By the time Bilbo arrives, Thorin and the Company are already packed and ready to leave. In November 3019, Sam, Frodo, Pippin, and Merryreturn to Bywater and discover that the Green Dragon inn had broken windows. There were also some Ruffians roaming around the Green Dragon. When they insulted Frodo, Sam, Pippin, and Merry drove them away. Green Dragon was revived after the Ruffians were driven away or killed.
