Hand of Saruman

The Hand of Saruman, often referred to as the White Hand, was a symbol used by the Orc soldiers of Saruman. It was predominantly used during the War of the Ring on their armor, shields, banners, helmets, and faces. It intimidated the enemies to a large extent. A tall black pillar with a stone carving resembling a long white hand was located on the pathway to Isengard. The hand had one of its fingers pointing north, and the nails painted red. [1]

Portrayal In Adaptations

Eomer's immediate recognition of the White Hand on the Orcs at the First Battle of the Fords of Isen reiterated that it was well known to the enemies. Most of Isengard's warriors possessed shields bearing a portrait of a white hand in a black background. This was witnessed by Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli when a few of them were killed by Boromir after Merry and Pippin's capture.
