Michel Delving

Michael Delving was the chief town of the Shire. It was situated in White Downs, the western edge within the WestFarthings. Its name is derived from Old Hobbit English meaning “a large excavation”.

Location

In the Shire, the Michel Delving settlement is located in the region of “The Delving Fields”. Even though the town is located in hilly areas, Michel Delving had many houses made of wood, bricks, and stones.

History

Michel Delving was unofficially known as the capital of the Hobbits. The Mathom House museum, the Town Hole, as well as the Lock Hole tunnels, were all located in Michel Delving. In the Shire, which was a voluntary orderly society, Michel Delving had the sole mayor, who played the role of Postmaster, Chief Sheriff, and various other ceremonial roles at fairs [1] The Ruffians converted the tunnels into prisons and stored huge amounts of food and beer there.
It was in the Third Age, that Frodo Baggins went to Michel Delving and released the prisoners from the Lock Hole tunnels.
