Sackville-Baggins

Sackville-Baggins, members of a young wealthy Hobbit family, were descendants of Mungo Baggins. This family tree was part of the late Third Age of The Shire.

History

This family tree came into existence when Camellia Sackville, heiress of the Sackville family headship married the son of Mungo Baggins, named Longo Baggins. The couple had a son named Otho. After Camelia’s father’s death, the family headship was passed to her son since there were no male heirs in the Sackville family. Thus, a new family name, a combination of both the mother and father’s called the Sackville-Baggins was born. Otho married Lobelia Bracegirdle who was from Hardbottle and had a child named Lotho. Despite belonging to the wealthy Sackville Family, the Sackville-Bagginses always were obsessed with the stewardship of the Baggins Family, especially the residence of Bilbo Baggins, Bag End. [1] They almost succeeded in acquiring the Bag End in the year TA 2942 when Bilbo disappeared and was thought to be dead. But their hopes were crushed and felt disappointed when Bilbo suddenly reappeared and adopted Frodo as his heir in TA 2989. Bilbo held a lavish birthday party to announce his heir. Though the Sackville-Bagginses never visited Bilbo earlier, they obliged his invitation and paid him a visit this time around.

In his speech, Bilbo made a special mention of the Baggins family, thanked and welcomed them. They felt deeply insulated when he said that his guests were expected to fill a Gross. Bilbo’s disappearance after the speech left them enraged. After Bilbo’s reappearance, they did not accept him to be the real person. They were envious of Frodo when he was adopted by Bilbo. After taking over the heirloom, Frodo decided to give away many parting gifts as directed by Bilbo. The Sackville Bagginses offensively offered Frodo bad bargain-prices for even valuable items. But Frodo was willing to give them only a case of silver spoons. He was accused of enjoying the luxuries himself. Otho wished to see Bilbo's will without which he had a chance to become Bilbo's heir. After Frodo's departure in September, TA 3018, Lobelia Sackville Baggins became the owner of Bag End since Otho had died. Thus, they finally gained control of the Shire with the aid of Lobelia's son Lotho’s alliance with Saruman. The Sackville Baggins family eventually disappeared after Lobelia’s death. This brief-lived family was disliked by many for their extremely obnoxious, snobby, rude, and greedy nature. All the members of the family were merely obsessed to acquire the luxurious Bag End from Bilbo, their cousin.
