The Second Age had a total of 3,441 years, and several significant events occurred in this period. Numenor's rise into power mainly defined the Second Age. In this age, Sauron, Morgoth's follower who took over spreading menace in Middle-earth after his master's vanquishment, began his conquest. He then created the One Ring to deceive the free-folk and bind them under his power and rule. Later on, his commanders, the Nazgul or Ringwraiths, also appeared to fulfill his schemes and efforts. Then, the Rings of Power's first wars transpired, and battles between Sauron's forces and the Elves ensued. After the destruction of Numenor, the Last Alliance of Elves and Men followed after. The age ended with the Middle-earth inhabitants defeating Sauron and his armies in the War of the Last Alliance.
