Ratbag

Also known as The Cowardly Orc, Ratbag was an Uruk in the “Middle Earth: Shadow of War” and “Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor”. He was a part of Sauron’s army until the ranger Talion rescued him from punishment. Post which, he began serving Talion in secrecy and hence became a secret traitor to Sauron’s army.

Talion’s first encounter with Ratbag happens when Ratbag is tied to a pole by his slave master, Goroth Caragor Tamer who tortured him for days for being a very weak orc. Upon meeting Talion, he cuts him a deal knowing that he is never treated as one of the orcs. He proposes to draw out the Black Hand of Sauron if Talion helps him reach the highest level of the Uruk hierarchy. Talion kills the Uruk authorities one by one. [1]Ratbag makes a promise that no one under his watch will try to stop Talion but he cannot guarantee about other Warchiefs whom Talion may have to kill himself. The Warchief’s bodyguard, Brogg the Twin, attempts to execute Ratbag but Talion intervenes and kills Brogg leaving Ratbag to become the Warchief’s new bodyguard. Next, the Warchief Mogg who is revealed to be Brogg’s twin catches Ratbag and hangs him up. Talion saves his life again by killing Mogg and making Ratbag a Warchief. Once Talion kills all the Warchiefs and destroys the monument of Sauron, the Hammer of Sauron arrives. He demands to know where the rest of the Warchiefs were when all this took place. Pushed to the front by a group of uruks, Ratbag explains that the Warchiefs have been killed in the battle. Unimpressed by his explanation, the Hammer instantly swings his stick and executes Ratbag for not following his duties of killing Talion. [2]

In the Shadow of War, it is revealed that Ratbag survived the perishable blow from Sauron and is alive. Throughout the war, Ratbag dodges attacks by any other orc or Uruk who may be meaning to hurt him. At this point, he starts working with an Olog-Hai named Az-Harto who he not only saved but also named a “Ranger” as a tribute to the ranger who helped him become the Warchief. Both of them started working together and moved up the ladder of Nuren’s Orc hierarchy reaching the authority of Overlord. When Bruz the Chopper catches hold of “Ranger”, Ratbag aid Talion in his missions to put an end to Bruz. Once Bruz is defeated and shamed by the Bright Lord, Ratbag and Ranger are left horrified by the torture he was put through. This was the last appearance of Ratbag, and his current whereabouts aren’t known.
