The Great Goblin

One of the known villains of the series is the commander of the goblins. He was the commander of the goblins from Hithaeglir. The place was known for its mountain summits. During the Age of Arda, he commandeered goblins from a Goblin place in the Hithaeglir. It was located in the proximity of the Cirith Forn en Andrath. These goblins were targeting the people using the entryway near their camp.

His Life Story

Since the tunnel was more accessible, a lot of travelers were utilizing it. As many were victimized, the next travelers used alternative routes to get to where they would go. The predators grew smart, and they created another entryway to the mountain. They named it the Front Porch. The chieftain often would command his minions to obtain a basket of fish from Gollum's cave. Inside it, there was a lake. Gollum lived off and was isolated in this cave. There were times when Gollum would catch them trespassing and looting his lake. He would slaughter them without a thought. In the Third Age of 2941, during the summertime, Bilbo Baggins, Thorin, and the Dwarves were seized on the goblin-made entryway in the Misty Mountains, Front Porch.

All of them were delivered to face the Great Goblin's wrath of power. He was in his throne of power in his cavern. Soldiers heavily protected him. He was less belligerent when he was questioning the whereabouts of his intruders. In this incident, the chieftain was having thoughts about whether to punish them or to set them free. It was surprising that the chieftain was weighing his options rather than having them killed on the spot. It was an unusual act for him. The prisoners were already expecting that the Great Goblin was toying them. It was one of his tricks. Its purpose is to spark unease and fear of his prisoners.

The interrogation of the prisoners was not hostile. But when the chieftain discovered the presence of the goblin-cleaver Elven sword, his rage consumed him. Thorin had Glamdring's mate with him. This sword was known to kill the goblins in its proximity. Its presence alone is power. The chieftain impulsively charged towards Thorin. All parties were stunned when all the lights in the cavern were stifled. Not one soul could see whatever is happening in the dark. Out of nowhere, a blue light emerged. It was the wizard. He employed the foe hammer.

It glows a bright light whenever it will sense danger nearby. Due to this distraction, Thorin's allies started to escape the cavern. But they did not go too far when the chieftain cut them off their path. He targeted who was leading the escaping forces of men. Coincidently it was led by the wizard. The chieftain underestimated the wizard all too easily. It eventually led to his death. The chieftain was stabbed to death, and he sustained fatal wounds he could not recover in time. The passing of the chieftain sparked such rage within his troops. The goblins plotted with a pack of wolves known as the Wargs.

One of the Orc leaders was Bolg. He wanted revenge for his father's death. His rage was deeply rooted in his father's killer. King Dain, the Ironfoot, killed Azog. Together with his gathered forces, they hunted the escapees to the ends of Erebor. These events started the battle against the allied forces of Elves, Lakemen, and Dwarves against Bolg's forces. This was only the beginning of the onslaught. The battle was so brutal and gruesome. Countless casualties were left on the battlefield.

Depiction in Adaptations

  • In the films of Peter Jackson, in the version of the Unexpected Journey, the Great Goblin was voiced over and portrayed by Barry Humphries. [1] But, the most famous role in his career was portraying Edna Everage. It ran on various TV series and special episodes. In the Hobbit, his physical appearance was close to a troll. He was a giant who has numerous scars, warts and lumps all over his body. The significant weapon he carried was a massive staff. It was adorned by a skull of an animal similar to a ram’s head.
  • The Great Goblin's death depiction in the series was profoundly different in the writings. Thorin pushed him to the cliff. Gandalf took the advantage and slashed his torso and slit the chieftain's throat.
  • The studio Rankin-Bass was responsible for producing the animated version in 1977. [2] John Stephenson was the actor voicing the chieftain and Bard.
