Thror's map is a map made by Thror to guide him in his quest to regain Erebor.

History

The Thror's map was drawn around TA 2790 when the King of Durin's Folk went into exile to Moria along with his family after being attacked by the Dragon Smaug. His son Thrain helped him draw this map that had instructions on opening the secret entrance to the Lonely Mountain in Moon letters. [1] As per Elrond, who read the Moon letters in 2941, the map was made with East at its top, containing illustrations of the Mountain of Erebor, the Running River, and the surrounding lands. [2] Elrond conceived that it was architected under the crescent moon on a night of the midsummer and was decorated with Old English Runes. The Moon letters on the map read: Stand by the grey stone when the thrush knocks and the setting sun with the last light of Durin's Day will shine upon the key-hole. The map survived the attacks of Smaug and the destruction of the Lonely Mountain in TA 2770. It was well preserved by Thror as an heirloom for the Durin folks. In TA 2790, Thror handed the map to his son Thrain when the old King set out on his expedition to the Mines of Moria.

In TA 2841, when Thorin left the Blue Mountains to regain Erebor, he carried the map along with a few of his folks. On his way, he was captured by the Orcs of Dol Guldur and kept as a captive by Sauron. Sauron was more interested in the Dwarven Ring of Power possessed by Tharin and was unbothered by the map. After seizing the Ring, Tharin was left in the torture chambers until his death. In TA 2850, when Gandalf secretly entered Sauron's lair at Dol Guldur, which had the old Tharin, he was presented with the map and the key to the secret pathway to the Lonely Mountains. Before dying, Tharin wished to pass them on to his son Thorin. The Thror's map proved to be of great help to his grandson Thorin when he set out on his quest to regain the Dwarf realm along with his folks and hobbit Bilbo Baggins. In April 2941, the map was handed over to Bilbo at Bag End to guide him throughout his adventure. The map was of great importance in bringing down Smaug and in handling Sauron.
