Uruk-hai pikemen were a group of soldiers armed with spikes in Saruman's army. These soldiers were part of his army during their fight against the Rohirrim at Helm's Deep Battle.
Description
The Uruk-hai clan was one of the most vicious rivals the Fellowship faced during their expedition to destroy the ring. They were born out of the ground and were a blend of Orcs and "goblin-men." The soldiers who served Saruman consisted of swordsmen, crossbowmen, scouts, pikemen, sappers, and berserker. They were powerful and more competent than Orcs and were grouped based on the weapons they used. The pikemen were the anti-cavalry army of Isengard. They were an integral part of the ten-thousand-fold Saruman army which launched an attack on the Rohirrim's fortress of Helm's Deep. [1]
Saruman, similar to other soldiers, bred them to withstand the legendary cavalry of the Rohirrim. These pikemen, who were considered the worst nightmare during cavalry rushes, possessed long two-handed pikes. These pikes were 12 feet long and capable of reaching a distance twice that of a sword with a swing half as fast. They did not carry any shields and wore armor similar to other Uruk-hai. The armor of these pikemen was a steel segmented breastplate, greaves, a helmet, and gauntlets. The infantry always supported these pikemen during a fight. They were victorious against cavalry units and mounted units and were mainly assigned to take on enemy monsters and cavalry. These smart pikemen had their own traditions and formations in handling enemies. [2] The Uruk-hai pikemen had used formations like pike walls and squares while charging towards their enemies.
These formations made them nearly indestructible and greatly aided in their self-defense against the attacking side. When assembled in a formation, they were stationary and had to disintegrate to move. They became much vulnerable to enemy attack during this disintegration. The pikemen were not strong enough to prevent the damage caused by swordsmen and archers. They were not equipped with any firearms or couldn't climb walls or launch into any fort. This was a significant limitation when they were part of sieges and battles.
