Built by Eärendil and Cirdan, Vingilot was a ship that Eärendil sailed in when he went to ask for forgiveness and help from the Valar.
Description
In the Song of Eärendil, Vingilot was described as the vessel, which was the fairest ever made.
It was constructed from pristine white timbers sourced from Nimbrethil, oars of golds and silver.
The front part of the ship was shaped into a swan. [1]
History
Following the light of Silmaril, Eärendil sailed Vingilot through the Shadowy Seas to the Blessed Realms of Aman becoming the first-ever mortal to reach there. However, he was not permitted to leave the place and return to Middle-Earth without joining Valar in the final War of Wrath against Morgoth. Vingilot was used in the war by the Valar, Elves, and Men. In the War of Wrath, Morgoth unleashed the winged dragons when all their other forces had failed. The group of winged dragons was led by Ancalagon the Black, the greatest dragon to have ever lived. He started pushing back the host of Valar with all his might. Then with a host of great birds, Eärendil arrived in Vingilot and battled the dragons. In the end, Eärendil killed Ancalagon, and the host of the Valar prevailed. After the War of Wrath ended, Eärendil sported Silmaril between the ridge of his eyebrows and sailed Vingilot into the sky. Vingilot was sanctified before being lifted into the sky. [2]
Etymology
