Bag End or Bag-End was a hobbit hole that served as the residence to the hobbits. It first became the house of Bilbo Baggins followed by Frodo Baggins and was eventually taken over by the Gardner family of Samwise Gamgee and his wife Rosie Cotton. This burrow was dug into the hills and situated at the very end of the streets of Bagshot Row overlooking the village in the north end of Hobbiton town.
Appearance
The Bag End residence opened up to the green-colored round door with a brass knob attached in the center. The passage that led the entrance featured a closed tube-shaped hall with panels on the wall and tiles on the floor. The house was furnished with carpets and shiny polished chairs. The house also had plenty of pegs attached everywhere to accommodate hats and coats brought in by the visitors. The entryway stretched into the hills featuring round doors on the sides. All the rooms inside this burrow which included bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens, pantries, and dining rooms were all situated at the same level to each other. However, the rooms situated on the left-hand side of the entryway enjoyed a plush view of the garden and meadows.
Etymology
J.R.R Tolkein derived inspiration for the name Bag Ends through his aunt. His aunt, Jane Naeve had a farm which was called Bag End by the localities in her town. Tolkien has been quoted stating, "It [Bag End] was the local name for my aunt's [Jane Neave] farm in Worcestershire, which was at the end of a lane leading to it and no further..." The name Bag Ends can also be upheld as a pun on the word "cul-de-sac" which literally translates to "bottom of the bag”. [1]
History
"In a hole in the ground there lived a Hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a Hobbit-hole, and that means comfort."
- Opening lines of The Hobbit (Chapter 1-An unexpected party)
Bag Ends was initially constructed by Bungo Baggins, Bilbo Baggin’s father inside the Hobbiton Hill. He lived there with his new wife Belladonna Took who took care of the finances related to the hobbit hole. They remained there till the end of their days after which the Bag End was inherited to his son Bilbo Baggins. He lived there and hired Holman Greenhand, Hamfast Gamgee, and later Samwise Gamgee to look after the meadows. Before Bilbo Baggins left the Shire for good, he passed on the authority of Bag Ends to his adopted heir, Frodo Baggins. ‘' [Frodo] ought to be comfortable here. I am leaving everything to him, of course... I hope he will be happy when he gets used to being on his own. It's time he was his own master now.'’ -The Fellowship of the Ring, (Chapter 1 - A Long-expected Party).
When Frodo left the Shire in the quest for the ring, he sold Bag Ends to his cousin Lobelia Sackville-Baggins. It was after the death of her son, Lotho, Lobelia Sackville transferred the property of Bag Ends back to Frodo. “[Lobelia] was crushed by the news of Lotho's murder, and she would not return to Bag End. She gave it back to Frodo, and went to her own people, the Bracegirdles of Hardbottle.” -The Return of the King, (Chapter 9 - The Grey Havens) Finally, when Frodo Baggins left the Shire, he gave away the custody of Bag Ends to Samwise Gamgee, who lived there with his family of Gardeners for many, many years.
