First off, why would the Valar need to do anything if the armada retreated? Second, I'm not a fan of these "what if" questions (I suppose I might have mentioned that before).

"Why didn't JRRT write Narnia?"
"Why didn't JRRT write Harry Potter?"
"Why didn't JRRT write A Song of Ice and Fire?"
etc.

Keep in mind some of them may well be asking such questions trolling for ideas to put into their own fanfic works.

Of course. Seems to be a concept that many asking the uninformed questions have trouble grasping.
And never mind that without LotR, there might never have been a Narnia, or Harry Potter, or the writings of George R.R. Martin and dozens of other authors (and perhaps also no first "Star Wars" film ...).

Being uninformed is a major reason for "eyeroll" questions. Kids may be excused, as they mostly really haven't had time to come across such information, but I very much doubt that the vast majority of those posting such question have that excuse.

Then there's the "movies-only" crowd. The Peter Jackson and Amazon stuff about Middle-earth. The "Narnia" films. "Game of Thrones" on TV. The "Harry Potter" films. I can imagine some of the "movies-only" segment (some perhaps with a "wood-pulp" allergy?) responding as follows:

J.R.R. Tolkien? Never heard of him.
C.S. Lewis? Never heard of him.
G.R.R. Martin? Never heard of him.
J.K. Rowling? Never heard of him.

Indeed. people choose their own way of how they relate to other people and the world. Other people and the world just suffer in many ways as a result. sadly, many (most?) people have no idea they should be suffering in some way as 'uninformed' is their chosen way to relate.

We cannot all be informed on everything... yet we should determine where we have differing thoughts or opinions to use those as a catalyst for 'becoming informed'.

But then... you see... there is the Religion of Opinion in play as well. (Not that it's one of Ent's pet peeves or something.)
