This thought came to me recently during my current re-read of the Trilogy. It is mentioned by Gloin to Frodo during their time at the Hall of Fire in Rivendell that a messenger of Sauron came to Dain and the Dwarves of the Lonely Mountain and attempted to barter with him for knowledge of Bilbo and the Shire, as well as to guarantee his allegiance to Mordor in the coming battles.
I wonder, how would things have turned out for the Free Peoples if Dain and the rest of Durin's folk had taken the bribe and sworn allegiance to Mordor. Sauron's messenger had originally stated that Sauron would return to Dain one of the Seven Rings of the Dwarves that he had in his possession and would provide bounty to them once the coming battles had ended. If Dain had taken the bribe and given Sauron information regarding Bilbo and the Shire, it seems clear to me that at the very least Sauron would have known the location of the One Ring roughly two years sooner than he did by sending the Nazgul far and wide to search for Shire and Baggins. I would think that this alone would have moved things strongly in the favor of Sauron's coming out on top during the War, but having a lot of dwarves on your side (especially those that had a lot of knowledge of the doings of Wilderland and Eriador) would prove very useful.
Anyone else have thoughts on this?
