To be sort-of-fair, I see film questions of the kind frequently on Quora and Reddit, trying to make sense of discrepancies and odd events in the movies. Among all the guffawing and read-the-booking, you can find occasional attempts to rationalize problems in "movie reality" terms. To me, it's like trying to push a car up a hill with a rope, but it allows for some creative thinking -- I guess.

I'm reminded of a former roommate who, whenever I griped about flaws in the original Star Trek, always had a plausible-sounding explanation. When queried about this, he said that in high school, he and his friends decided that "instead of sitting around complaining about problems with Star Trek, we'd sit around thinking up explanations for them".

Here we have as clear a demarcation as could be found between nerd, and

Indeed, I would agree.
Not to mention, SOMEONE who shall remain nameless, recently mentioned we have our own fair share of what may be 'seemingly stupid' questions here on TTF.
And 'stupid' needs to be defined too...as it is usually 'in the eyes of the beholder'. As may be no surprise, every beholder has a different set of eyes.

At the end of the day, I guess it all boils down to whether we're going to be one of these:

Or a good or a bad one of these.

I wonder what we're saying to our own members... especially newbies to Tolkien, or to the forum... as we bash other people's questions.
Could it be "I wonder what they're doing to mine, behind my back?"

Well, maybe Quora is exactly the place for such questions.
I've seldom read answers that ridicule the question (or questioner).
Truth be told, in answer to the questions I have read (and I don't frequent Quora very often) half the answers are as bonkers as the questions.
And these are the "serious answers"; i.e., the person answering is providing what he thinks is sound information.
It gets really pathetic if there are "numbers" involved,; i.e. i the answer involves doing any mathematics, even simple arithmetic.
So it's a good thing for the poster that he ask his questions there (and leave us to our sophomoric guffawing here.***)

Of course.
And though I have guffawed myself a time or two in the past, I will choose to withhold future guffaws, lest my enjoyments offer up some sort of resistance to others' feeling of freedoms.

I just wanted to bring to our attention sometimes our pleasures can present circumstances having adverse impacts elsewhere.

We faced this (to a much more serious degree) during the previous abuse of people's thoughts during the RoP melee and beyond, to the point where some were choosing not to post their writings, poetry etc.

But I do recognize I'm a very different person than many if not most... and my choices are frequently very different as well.

I just feel I would be remiss if I didn't mention the possibilities for consideration.

Wouldn't a better ending to ‘The Lord of the Rings’ be Sam being forced to push Frodo into the fire?

The first response to that in Quora by Fraser MacWilliams is brilliant - starting with:

I'm going to make the very Entish assumption what the poster is trying to say here, is the age old question: "Did Tolkien write this representing any real events, like WWII, east vs. west, communism vs. supposed 'freedom', some other war from history, or such things?"

In other words, I MUST suspect underlying the 'surface words' there is a picture... a concept... an idea... the poster is trying to communicate from.

Otherwise, if not, well...... umnhhh..... there it is.

Besides, it's not so far-fetched. After all, look at all the dinosaurs they bred for Jurassic Park and sequels, and in the 4th segment they wanted to put the raptors to military use..!!

If we could breed all those raptors and such why couldn't Melkor and Sauron breed the dragons, Orcs and things?
