Starting off with name-checks for Beren and Turin in the same sentence!

[OT] strange that the path through Cirith Ungol is said to be quicker than the Morgul road for crossing the mountains from the Dead City!

Anyway, unexpected possible corroboration of the tenuous Ungoliant mention earlier (from the Plan of Shelob's Lair):
"In what far-off time the main tunnel and the great round pit had been made, where Shelob had taken up her abode in ages past, they did not know"

A great chapter: the best in book IV in my opinion. Having dealt with Gollum, Sam turns to find Frodo lying prone with Shelob bending over his beloved master: his elven-blade fallen from his grasp. The fight with Gollum was the mere taster for this one. Shelob doesn't have a soft spot (actually and metaphorically) though she doesn't like being slashed by Sting. In revenge, Shelob tries to squash Sam with her great bulk but it works against her as she only squashes against Sting - ouch!

What I find remarkable about this short wonderful passage is that Tolkien writes about the fight from both Sam and Shelob's point of view. I wonder if JRRT is a member of the MESPLS? (A little puzzle there dear readers). Hammond and Scull point out in their Reader's Companion that spiders don't have compound eyes but I think we can allow poetic licence for greater effect here. Galadriel's phial comes in useful again and poor Shelob retreats to her lair to lick her wounds.

Now the big decision for Master Samwise: finding Frodo paralysed and not unreasonably thinking him dead, Sam makes the agonising decision to take the Ring, leave Frodo and head to Mt Doom alone. Just the decision Mr Spock would endorse. It isn't long before Sam hears orc-voices and Sam puts the Ring on! We aren't told Sam's reasoning but surely, in this case, it is the right thing to do. Sam has just seen off Shelob but two troops of orcs - no. The best move is to avoid detection so I think we can surmise Sam decided to put the Ring on rather than was forced to by the Ring. Sam finds the world changed and his senses sharpened. The orcs find Frodo and carry him back to the tower.

We then have a tremendous passage featuring a fascinating conversation between two orc commanders: Gorbag from Minas Morgul and Shagrat of the Cirith Ungol tower. And what do we discover? They are much the same as soldiers of any army, human or orc. They have a moral code such that cowardice is thought shameful. They moan about the lack of discipline of their troops. They resent Sauron's favouritism of the Nazgul. They would like to set up on their own in a place where there is good loot and no "Big Bosses". They don't live up to their ideals leaving poor old Ufthak hung up by Shelob but rather than rescue him they laughed at him and left him there!.

James Bond Sam overhears that Frodo is not dead and climbs over the heavy stone door barring the tunnel but can't stop the orcs take Frodo to the tower and is locked outside.

End of book IV

'Those hideous folds could not be pierced by any strength of men, not though Elf or Dwarf should forge the steel or the hand of Beren or of Turin wield it.' Shelob is an extremely powerful entity - something which I don't always remember, being fascinated/appalled by the whole giant spider thing.

'Whether she lay long in her lair, nursing her malice and her misery, and in slow years of darkness healed herself from within, rebuilding her clustered eyes, until with hunger like death she spun once more her dreadful snares in the glens of the Mountains of Shadow, this tale does not tell.' Well I think giving this much detail lets us think that that's exactly what happened - which means she is still out there!

I've always thought of Shagrat and Gorbag as a couple of veteran NCO's possibly drawn from Tolkien's real life experiences in WWI.

'The great doors slammed to. Boom. The bars of iron fell into place inside. Clang. The gate was shut. Sam hurled himself agaist the bolted brazen plates and fell senseless to the ground. He was out in the darkness. Frodo was alive but taken by the Enemy.' Love the 'Boom' and 'Clang'!

Tolkien couldn't get the book (s) published in one volume as he wanted, so you would have read TT from 11th November 1954; you then had to wait almost a year to read RotK (20th October 1955), and even then you would have to read almost 150 pages before you got back to Sam and Frodo. In our modern binge everything at once world, it's almost impossible to understand what a cliffhanger this was!

I always think of Shagrat and Gorbag like Forrest and Bubba; as common soldiers, they dream of buying a shrimp boat after their war ends and going into the shrimping business together. Of course, if you haven't seen the movie "Forrest Gump" this will not mean anything to you.

Well what with that unfortunate squabble between them, Gorbag won't be teaming up with anyone now, but maybe Shagrat makes it away down south somewhere nice? He could even team up with good old Tracker Orc for a little spot of (fairly) harmless looting and plundering. Happy days ahead!

'Now he tried to find strength to tear himself away and go on a lonely journey - for vengeance. If once he could go, his anger would bear him down all the roads of the world, pursuing, until he had him at last: Gollum. Then Gollum would die in a corner.'

Chillingly put. The cross rude hobbit is in a really dark place here!
