Yep, I don't recall when I first learned that but it was probably middle or high school school (50-55 years ago).
I read that the sun makes a horrendously loud roaring din.
By way of comparison standing 150ft away from a jet engine (50 yds–half a football field) your ears are being permanently damaged by 125 dB of sound, a level btw that is also how loud the music is at your typical live rock concert.

All my friends in my *ahem* younger days listened to "rock" (in all its permutations), went to concerts, blasted their stereos (aka "Sound Systems") at full volume.
All of them needed hearing aids by the time they hit their 50s (some sooner than that).
I am pushing 70 and don't [yet] need hearing aids (altho' the time is getting close...getting more and more difficult to distinguish B from V)
I listened to classical music.
There is nothing, of course, that precludes a person from listening--in one's own home-- to "The Ride of the Valkyrie" at 130dB (Colonel Kilgore, call your office). But it is unheard of (HA-HA...little auditory pun there) for a symphony orchestra to play any work at that dB level.
And because my parents would in no way allow any of their kids to play music (of any genre) that loud, my hearing was spared damage.
(We will not discuss the time – I was 10 – when a Black Cat firecracker went off 3 feet from my left ear.... the one that is now beginning to give me the B/V problem. )

I'm surprised I don't. In the summer between high school and college, I was working in a flour mill by day, and playing in a band at night.

I too listened to classical music, after seeing a film at age 12 about Beethoven. But I listened to a varied range of music, having joined one of those "record clubs" the record companies used to promote back in the day ("12 Albums for $1!"). Among my first was this one, with which I used to drive my mother nuts:

Ah, yes, the Columbia Record Club, is the one that stciks in my mind.
There were others but CRC was the one that seemed to dominate the ads; I think my brother joined that one.
The closest I came to electronic Music was "Switched-On Bach" with Walter Carlos** playing Bach pieces on a MOOG Synthesizer.

**Walter Carlos is now Wendy Carlos...happened a while back , don't recall when.

Ah, yes, the Columbia Record Club, is the one that stciks in my mind.

Mine was the RCA Record Club, though I later joined "The Columbia Masterworks Subscription Society", which was all classical, and-- trivia time! -- would mail out a quarterly lp "magazine" containing snippets of new releases, along with comments by performers and living composers.

I will say that, with no classical listeners among my friends, I made a number of discoveries that way -- P.D.Q. Bach among them.

Ditto on the the "no classical listeners among my friends".
However, my eldest brother, like yourself, listened to a variety of genres which included Classical (and didn't include Country-Western 😄), so he introduced me to the more obscure Classical composers.
PDQ Bach...musical genius (and maybe just an all around genius). He should be canonized among the other great composers.
The Unbegun Symphony, the opera Oedipus Tex, the Pathetic Symphony, the Pervertimento for Bagpipes, Bicycle and Balloons., and so many others.

I remember the Columbia Record Club. I think almost all of my 8-track collection came from them. Here's a picture for all of you young'uns out there.

Here's another bit of trivia: there was a brief period in which some music was released only on 8 track; those are highly sought after by collectors.

Why is that? I don't know much of musical history and am curious of the reason why they would need to do that. Was it because of technology, culture, or something else?

It was thought at the time that lps were on the way out -- cars were beginning to come equipped with 8 track players, for example -- and once cassette tapes took over, some 8 track-only pieces were just never reissued for various reasons.

Kind of a similar situation (altho' I don know if the historic reasons are the same) is that some movies are available only as VHS tapes.
They have never be remastered (or transferred or whatever the techy method is called) as DVD or BD.

K-Tel...yes.... another trip down Music Memory Lane 😄.
I can recall quite a few classmates that had a specific CCR album on 8 track.
But since I really didn't listen to it I can't remember which one, but it probably had "Proud Mary" on it.

My dad had this record and my grandfather recorded it to cassette tape so we could listen to it. Every year he'd take us camping and we'd listen to that tape the whole way to and from the campground. I have a copy of the vinyl now .

Just going by the titles I have heard:
On Side 1: 1, 3, 6, 11, maybe 12 if it is what I think it is.
Side 2 : 1, 2, 3, 7**, 8, 12
If I played all the ones I didn't count I might find I recognize at least a few of those...(but I'm not going to do that.)

** No. 7 Title reminded me of the Smothers Brothers singing "My Old Man's a Sailor", and I thought the Dustman song was the original version.
I found it on YT... it's similar in some ways so I think the S-Bs may have used it as a starting point for their song, which I do like.
