Have you ever been to a club with free gin?

I have a membership at a tennis club nearby. I often eat a sandwich in their clubhouse because they don't charge. I never gave it much thought, but it is hilarious to me that the gin is also free. I see some people drinking gin for three hours, dressed for tennis or golf but never actually playing. Is this normal for sports clubs?

Is it all the time or only at certain times?
AI says the costs for the drinks are "built into the membership fees" which can be pretty high.
(There is no free lunch...or free drinks)

There is always food out and a bar, when it's open. I'm sure the dues exceed the cost of sandwiches and gallon liquor, but one might view the policy of a club to enable its customers to drink half the day amusing and a bit counterproductive.

As long as the membership dues are paid and cover the operating costs.
Well heeled members may be nothing more than Social Members; they join specifically to treat it as a social club.
The sport (whatever it is) is a secondary purpose of the club. And btw that practice is nothing new

I'm a wallflower. I rarely spend time lounging about chatting but, if I did, I could think of worse places. It's easier to walk there than have food delivered.

Walking is good for you. Easiest exercise in the world...you don't need equipment, and you don't need to think about how you do it.
And you can walk in any weather.**
