Are there any texts on the "unnamed creatures" of the deeps of Moria?

Gandalf, recounting his fight with the Balrog, talks about tunnels dug up by unnamed creatures that neither him nor Sauron know about. The second time I read the LOTR books (recently, with more attention) this passage legitemely sent a chill down my spine. So I wonder, does tolkien talk about any underground creatures in any text of his (not even specifically the ones in moria)? I suppose not because if no one knows about them no one registered them, but who knows.

I'm not sure if there are separate texts somewhere, but I'd argue they're mentioned in The Hobbit.
