connection between gullum and sauron

i was just wondering if there is a slight connection between gullum and sauron? i mean some authors put in symbolics like in the book ethan frome the cat symbolizes the wife so isent it possible that gullum can symbolize sauron in the way that they are both searching for the ring, they both know were the ring is yet they can do nothing about it, and when gulum takes the ring over the cliff into the chasm both sauron and gullum are detroyed at the same time.

Thought provoking.
However, I disagree with one point. Gollum certainly knew where the ring was. However, Sauron was using the Nazgul to track the ring; and while they found it, it disappeared from them.

Just my two cents.

I think that Sauron was using both the Nazgul AND Gollum to track the ring. BTW there is a new debate in the Guild of Scholars which might offer some insight on this subject...if/when it gets started.

From Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien, letter 246, on what might have happened if Gollum had not intervened to take the Ring from Frodo at the end:
I do not think they [the Nazgûl] could have attacked him with violence, nor laid hold upon him or taken him captive; they would have obeyed or feigned to obey any minor commands of his that did not interfere with their errand – laid upon them by Sauron, who still through their nine rings (which he held) had primary control of their wills.
The Nine became slaves to their Rings which were controlled by Sauron, and then Sauron himself took those Nine Rings back and used them to control the Nazgûl.

It is not stated anywhere when and how Sauron took them back, and where they were when Sauron was disembodied at the fall of Númenor and later when he was disembodied by Isildur.

It is possible they were hidden away in those days, when Sauron might have used the One Ring alone to control the Nazgûl and that Sauron brought them out of wherever they were hidden when he arose again during the Third Age.
