When they came to their meal, they found that the Elves had filled their bottles with a clear drink, pale golden in colour: it had the scent of a honey made of many flowers, and was wonderfully refreshing. Very soon they were laughing, and snapping their fingers at rain, and at Black Riders.

Anyway after this they start singing songs about drinks and then all of a sudden they hear a Black Rider calling to another. Did Gildor put alcohol in their bottles and get them drunk? because they sure were acting like it.:D

...

That is what I would have answered if it hadn't been spam.
Well anyway I don't think that elves drunk any alcohol at all, they could get high enough on memories and all that stuff. But it's an idea, of course.

"Stay! Stay! Stay this madness!"

Evil Gildor my eye! ;)

Not only did the elves drink wine in The Hobbit but I see an indication of it in The Lord of the Rings. The only specific I recall beyond a doubt is when Merry and Pippin prepare a meal for their friends in Isengard and Legolas says something that makes me think that he likes wine..."Though I'd rather learn how they found the wine" or something to that efect. Though, I may be reading too much into it.
The desctiptions of the effects that the elvish drinks such as the stuff Gildor had, Glorfindel had, and the cordial of Rivdendell sound like alcohol to me. The cordial of Rivdendell had the ability to warm everybody up. I have always imagined that it is a very strong alcohol.

I imagine that the high elves in the shire gave the drink to the hobbits because it must have been very resfreshing, and they must have thought that the hobbits would love to have some. They also must have known that the hobbits would not go easy on it.
I imagine Gildor laughing and saying "No more no more!" As the elves of Lothlorien did when Gimli went nuts with the Lembas. :D

I will be restraining Nom right now:D;)
You can not hold me back! :D

Well but that would have killed them I think. Not in the way "Hey wasn't there a road down somewhere here... AAAAAAARGGGGGG!!! THUMP"
But because the alcohol would put the blood in circulation (when cold the body gathers blood in torso) And when the blood that got cooled down in youe limbs reach your heart you die.

And we all know hobbits are drunkards, they ahd a great taste for bear. They only grew wheat for brewing it I think, and the gaffer maybe had his own private garden with many weeds that few had heard of... Well anyway, I think that Sam might have put his hopes tp Gollum to find them for him in Ithilien, to bring home and have a real nice time. And that gem that Arwen gave Frodo to ease his pain, what was that really?
