A question on Quora led me to wonder what the top speed of Shadowfax is. An Internet search turned up an estimate on stackexchange.com of 150 mph, which seems a very high estimate (and I don't understand how it was obtained). Gandalf rides from Isengard to Minas Tirith, a distance of 440 miles (if I'm not mistaken) in four days, with I think one stop. If Shadowfax could run at 150 mph, he could make that trip in less than four hours, not four days.

Anyway, anybody have any insight?

But, as a good friend liked to say "great minds think alike" 😁😉
Well, we've been doing equestrian elaborations for over two pages now; and Squinty mentioned Bill the pony earlier ... this isn't exactly like coming up with e=mc² ... 🤓

As an aside, my great-great grandfather rode for the Pony Express in 1860. His route was between Omaha and Denver. I have a hard time imagining how difficult that job must have been to ride through the barren prairie in all sorts of weather.
