Well there was enough of them to man the deeping wall and there was also more elves on the ground behind the wall shooting arrows. Since there was 3 lines of elves lining the entire deeping wall and about 100 elves in a line i would guess about 750 elves total in Helms deep. Its kind of sad when there all slaughtered and that not one of them made it out alive. How many do u think were there?

Yeah, I'd guess around 200, and that's as many orcs as they killed in the first volley! And the second! And the third!

Even though that wasn't in the books it was a really cool part of the movie.
Lauding the new look of Ithrynluin

Nice dancing by the rainbow-starlight in thy new identity-panel, ol' pal;
And a right fine motto in Latin to adumbrate thy exultance nocturnal.

Only 4049 posts, however? Tsk, tsk! Let's chip in a bit more often, eh?

Comment coming from some Ent-winded Tree-friend who can't distinguish the moon. . .

my self would say 200-300 elves would be about right because when you saw them marcing into helms deep there was a colulm 50 deep and about 4 or 5 wide. which to me sounds like a couple of standard companys who were actually sent mainly to help them survive longer until gandalf arrived with aid.

i acually agree ive read the great books and there was only one elf and it was legolas and besides ind the film pj put in about 200 elves

As others said, many years ago, there was only one elf. Why does it matter? Because it mattered to Tolkien. The Last Alliance of Elves and Men was the LAST ALLIANCE OF ELVES AND MEN. There wasn't ANOTHER alliance. If PJ needed to show an "Elvish fight scene", he could just as easily have shown the battle in which Elendil and Gil-Galad lost their lives at the end of the Second Age.

As it was, it was yet another unnecessary alteration because PJ thinks he's smarter than everyone else.

AMEN!!!!

It's kind of strange how the battles in the film actually have smaller stated numbers for the free peoples than those in the book. I guess it's supposed to increase the stakes, but it just makes the orcs look like really terrible fighters when they outnumber their opponents by such ridiculous factors and can't just roll over them. Especially when you build them up as killing machines bred for war, as the Uruk-hai are presented, and the only competent fighter among them appears to be Lurtz. The other can't even hold their own against an army composed partly of old men and children. Is their equipment just that poor? Their armour doesn't appear to stop swords very well, so maybe.

Sending a relief force of a few hundred from Lorien also seems so niggardly when you think about the comparative sizes of ancient/medieval armies and what they're up against. (And with Lorien under attack at the time, I'm not sure they could have afforded to send any at the time...but that's not in the film, so whatever.)
