Would things have been any different?
If Gandalf had caught Gollum, and killed him or whatever and Sauron or any servent of Sauron never got their hands on him to discover "Shire" and "Baggins" would the quest still have been undertaken?
The way i see it is that Sauron would be utterly terrified as he would have had no idea as to where it was.
So he would have made war much quicker. Wiped out all of everywhere, and the goodies would have lost undoubtably.
