I would take out Haldir and his Elven army arriving at Helms Deep and replace it with the Sons of Elrond (my uncles) and some Dunedain Rangers bringing the standard Arwen made. I miss that book scene where they ride up upon Aragorn and Theoden at night. IF... an Elven army is needed, then include them at Helms Deep, but not at the expense of that scene.

I would remove Aragorn getting electrocuted by the Palantir and add the scene where Aragorn uses the Palantir with confidence and wrests the stone from Sauron and proclaims himself the Heir of Elendil! I would also gray Aragorn and weather his look some after that.

I would remove the green ant dead army attacking over the Pelennor Fields and add the Southern armies and the freed ship slaves attack off the ships.

I could go on...

Maybe someone already said this (and I'm not going to use my Wayback Machine to check) ...so:
What I would like to see removed: any scenes that are PJ added (or modified) fever dreams
What I would like to see added (more accurately, "restored") to the story: any scenes (or sub story lines) PJ didn't include.

I took issue with Frodo betraying Sam, and also with Faramir being less in the films and more like Boromir, and with Aragorn's 21st century angst about being king.

LOTR needed a Silmarillion throwback scene to understand the psychological depth of Sauron's malice. What specifically about the Valar was Sauron rebelling against?

As long as Sauron had the Ring it meant that Sauron didn't need to confront his inferiority (fear etc) with respect to the Valar. And Isildur stole that peace from him, so Sauron became specially motivated to remove peace from Isildur and his heirs.

No, Lord of the Rings should not need supplementary material to be liked.

I'd add Frodo and Sam getting their heroes' praise in The Field of Cormallen...

"...knights in bright mail and tall guards in silver and black standing there...bowed before them...one blew a long trumpet...great host was drawn up, in ranks and companies glittering in the sun...swords unsheathed...horns and trumpets sang...'Long live the Halflings! Praise them with great praise!'"

I would take out Frodo bullying Sam because of some crumbs. It just completely ruined their relationship, and their characters. Book Frodo would have never done something like that, no matter how strong the Ring's influence was. And even if he did tell Sam to go away, I don't think Sam would have gone. Look at the scene at the end of FotR where Sam swims out to Frodo's boat (or, well, tries to swim), despite the fact that Frodo commands him to stay. He's sticking with Frodo, no matter what.
Oddly enough, I would like to add Bergil son of Beregond. I know he's not really essential to the plot, but I just like him as a character. I like how even though his city is about to be attacked (and he knows it) he's joking around with Pippin and playing with the other kids. I think that there is something very precious that young children have, that they don't worry about the future too much and just enjoy life as it comes. I wish that the movie had found some way to incorporate that. But maybe I'm the only one who would have enjoyed that, so yeah...
