Rings of Power: Positive vs Negative

I already wrote in the Galadriel thread:
"My guess is that they want to portray a modern character transformation in the series, as has been the recipe for success in many a modern film adaptation"

So that also seems to be the focus for Sauron in season 2, after they screwed up Galadriel in the same way in season 1. There are many series where this method works quite well and makes for a successful modernization, but here it seems bumbling, forced and inappropriate. And it also sounds somehow uninspired. Was there an AI at work again or just a bunch of losers who don't have (and don't want to have) any in-depth knowledge of Tolkien's works? 😉

Edit:

"Sauron had a son who Adar killed."

The aim is to create sympathy points for Sauron. He's actually not originally evil, he was just driven to it because those around him were so mean to him.
Well, they're making it extremely easy for themselves again. The basic idea may not be that wrong, but the implementation is very stupid. Like a soap opera.

As for context, I have a talking Siberian tiger who's a DJ in his free time.
And you're deathly afraid of vacuums and I have sentient flowers in my hair that allow me to understand animals! Still makes more sense than Tom Bombadil being Morgoth!

Here's a screen capture of all the alleged leaks.

Ugh, I hope most of this is just rumor (especially the nonsense about Morgoth being Tom Bombadil). I hope Amazon does not actually have rights to Silmarillion content either. As much as I'd love to see a good visual adaptation about Silmarillion stories, based on RoP S1, I do not want to see Amazon allowed to touch my favorite Tolkien book with a 10-foot pole.

They don't -- just Hobbit and LOTR, so most of their stuff is based on the Appendices.
Checked the Wikipedia article on the Tolkien Estate:

"The various holdings of the Tolkien family, including the estate, have been organized under The Tolkien Company, the directors of which were Christopher Tolkien until August 2017 and his wife Baillie Tolkien, and J. R. R. Tolkien's grandson Michael George Tolkien. The executors of the estate proper were Christopher Tolkien (died 16 January 2020, who was sole literary executor, and (succeeding J.R.R. Tolkien's lawyer Frank Williamson), Cathleen Blackburn of Maier Blackburn, who has been the estate's solicitor for many years."

Baillie is 82, Michael George 80. I would have expected some of the following generation(s) to have become involved by now. "Rebel" Simon is 64. Some of the great-grandchildren respectively grand-nephews (Hilary's descendants) are over 50, more in their 40's.

I generally enjoyed Amazon's "The Rings of Power." Among its biggest strengths are its breathtaking visuals that truly bring Middle-earth to life, capturing the beauty and grandeur Tolkien described. The diverse cast brings fresh perspectives to the lore, and the expansive storytelling ambitiously explores new narratives within the established universe. However, the series isn't without its flaws. The pacing can feel uneven, with some episodes dragging while others pack too much in. Additionally, while it introduces new elements, not all resonate well with Tolkien purists, creating a divide among fans. Lastly, some character arcs seem underdeveloped, leaving viewers wanting more depth and connection to the characters' journeys.

Yes, little has polarized the Tolkien community like RoP. Oh... except for PJ's renderings... and Bakshi's before him... and every other.

But you're in good company, as there are many who 'generally enjoyed' it... liking what was good (in their opinion) and disliking some other parts of it.
Then there are those who are "all or nothing at all." You must entirely like it, or you must most certainly hate it.
Sadly, few are in the camp able to see both sides of the thing... and those who 'like' it are often very quiet, because the haters are so vitrilic.

At the end of the day, it's all pure opinion.

As we approach the advent of RoP Season 2, we will no doubt see again the baring of fangs and flailing of claws, So it is well to be prepared.

Even here on TTF, where we have worked hard to help people see opinion for what it is, and another's opinion is just as valid as our own, we expect some level of deluge of those unwilling to allow others to live unless they are in agreement with the flood's opinion.

As has been and will always (we hope) be the case here on TTF, reasonable and reasoned discussion will be fine. Unreasonable insistence on agreement will be handled. And flagrant/ongoing abuse of others for their opinions will be elimninated.

No one learns from the entrenched Religion of Opinion. Only from listening twice, speaking once, and mutually discussing thoughts intelligently.
