To start with your second assumption, I'm practically certain I've never read anything by Conan Doyle.
What I do have is a 14-DVD box of the Rathbone / Bruce films spanning 1939 to 1946.
I haven't watched anything close to all of them, as I had the impression the wartime scripts took a steep nose-dive.

Look into the UK production of Sherlock Holmes 1984 -1994, with Jeremy Brett as Holmes.
I've seen a lot of "movie Holmes" and he comes incredibly close to the Doyle character, the closest by far.
And the stories are also true to Doyle's.

I was unfamiliar with him when I began watching the Holmes series (or thought I was).
Upon doing a little research I discovered that he played "Freddy" ( the love interest) in the 1964 movie "My Fair Lady" (Rex Harrison, Audrey Hepburn).
His "singing" in that movie, btw, is dubbed.

Very much so. lol with my brother, I recently started "casting" for a Star Wars prequel trilogy that was made PRIOR to the Original Trilogy (so the prequel films if they were made in '52, '55, & '58). We cast Jeremy Brett as teenage Anakin Skywalker (provided he could pull off an American accent).

lol I did! I recognized him while watching it one time. I'm not surprised they dubbed in a voice for him, they did for Audrey Hepburn too.
