Second-guessing and Misunderstanding Tolkien

Seriously, can anyone parse that meme? The subreddit is called 'Silmarillionmemes', but perhaps it should be 'Sillymarillion memes'. Because I don't think I've seen a single one that makes any sense.

The painting is of Maedhros and Maglor discovering Elrond and Elros after the third Kinslaying. Elrond is remembering this moment, which was caused by another Oath, and so he thinks it would be a bad idea to make the Fellowship swear a similarly unbreakable Oath.

I am at a loss here, I understand the meme but when did Gimli and Legolas had that conversation? Basically a meme about nothing.
It was Gimli and Elrond, actually. From The Fellowship of the Ring, in the chapter The Ring Goes South:
I've always loved that exchange. It's very reflective of both characters, and provides some excellent foreshadowing, as well as beautiful phrasing.

It's my second favorite quote/convo in all LOTR. 😊

And now I have to ask: What's your first favorite?
Mwahahahaha, you played into my hands!

But seriously, my favorite quote is Gandalf's
"And so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us."
That whole exchange between him and Frodo...just so true! 🤏

I often think about how to "redeem the time" in a manner worthy of the calling in the Lord, and Gandalf's quote here is precisely reminiscent of the thought we have the choice to make-- how will we spend our time on this earth with the life we've been gifted?

I like that one... one of my favorites.
I'll have to think a bit to see if I can come with my most-est favorite-est quote (which actually may turn out to be that one).
We shall see....

Yes, I remember that part, but I don't think it has anything to do with the oath of Feanor, Elrond was wise enough to know how dangerous and oath could be and wanted the members of the fellowship to help on their own will.

I would agree with this. The meme's not saying the Oath of Feanor actually had anything to do with it. It's just making a funny comparison.
