As we know by now he wrote tons of stuff. It's the publishing bit that he kind of never really got the hang of. It happened even with his professional work.

A lot of them.
Superman first appeared in Action Comics #1 in 1938, which, btw, sold at Auction this past June for $1.5 Million (USD)

The original Superman was a human-like alien whose physical abilities were enhanced by living on a planet (earth) that was a slightly lower mass slightly than his home planet and whose sun was of a different spectral class than Krypton's sun.
He was stronger, faster, could hear and see better.
What he couldn't do was fly, or see through walls (no X-ray Vision), or hold up the Brooklyn Bridge, (but probably a small covered bridge.)

That is why the description of him says he could "LEAP tall building with a single bound (jump)".
He could lift a car. He could outrun an express train (125 mph) but not a speeding bullet.
He was impervious to bullets (skin like Kevlar) but not atom bombs (which had not yet been developed).
Think of him as a genetically enhanced human.

As time went on DC morphed him into the Superman we know with "super powers".
