Sam was, of course, just 'collateral damage' getting rid of the two failed ring-bearers.

Gwaihir, who didn't bring the ring to Mt. Doom to begin with, would fly Gandalf in at the last minute of course. (Gwaihir was hoping for a Sam-snack, but Gandalf let loose too soon, before he got past Sam watching the wrestling match.)
