Second-guessing and Misunderstanding Tolkien

Come Watson, let us depart the company of skeptics and make our way to the Diogenes Club.
Mycroft is good company.... and he will have an excellent sherry on hand.
And after a few rounds you get Sherrylock Holmes *burp* 🥴

Alcohol (and I'm sure you know this) was not Holmes' "escapist drug" of choice.
Morphine and occasionally cocaine, both still legal in 19th-century England. I doubt this was portrayed in any of the Rathbone / Bruce films, at least if they would be subject to the Hays Code in the US.

Your Sheriffs sound locksidaisical.
We also don't have any She(i)r(r)iffs here. But then the Bavarian police drive around in BMW station wagons as patrol cars (and perhaps Audis, too, another Bavarian car brand).

(Where's that train wreck GIF?) 😏

Nice! 🙂
The one I remembered, though, had a broken bridge, the train coming from the left, and didn't show a Wile E. Coyote-style impact at the bottom of the gorge the bridge spanned. But then everything Radaghast digs up is a worse wreck than anything I've managed with my wildest tangents. Occasionally I have the impression that not all, sometimes none, can follow my inspired innovative insights ...

... which is a dang shame, as I sometimes get lost in my own trigonometry and could use outside help to understand it myself ... 😬

No. But it was Watson's remedy for just about any ailment in the Sherlockian Canon..!!
Fainting? booze. Stomache ills? booze. A sting by The Lion's Mane? booze. Completely missing the boat on the right deductions? booze.

I used to say most of Sherlock's 'deductions' were actually 'inductions'... which is actually quite the bit more amazing, since induction is far more difficult for folks than deduction. Certainly was for Watson. And poor Doyle himself didn't ever quite get there in sharing what his Sherlockian works were really demonstrating. Yet he was wise in leaving it to his readers to 'deduce.'

He did get us so very close we can deduce it ourselves, as he said such things as 'from a drop of water...a logician could infer the possibiility of an Atlantic or a Niagara without having seen or heard of one or the other.' And 'pray tell me what it is that you can infer from this hat?' and many othere instances. There are 38 references to 'infer', 'inference' and inferences'. Yet he called it the 'science of deduction'.

Holmes' work was 'the science of deduction' because he spent a great deal of time inferring from the minutia, and once develiping his body of 'probabilities' he was enabled to 'deduce' the solution to the situation at hand correctly, many if not most of the times. Thus it's a 'science'... involving more induction than deduction but one united whole.

You probably all know this and I'm babbling nonsensically, but it took me some time to put it all together back in the day.

Thank you for bringing Sherlock to the fore for a moment.... quite nostalgiac for me.

Savant:
1. a person of learning
especially : one with detailed knowledge in some specialized field (as of science or literature)

2. a person affected with a developmental disorder (such as autism or intellectual disability) who exhibits exceptional skill or brilliance in some limited field (such as mathematics or music)

I have no idea how to relate Savant to an 'asquatch' or a sasquatch and have never heard of a Savant Sasquatch... though we've had many fine discussions deep in the woods where they can't be seen. They're a little short on book learning but are very well experienced at hide-and-go-seek-games.

In terms of what Tolkien would think regarding a 'Savant asquatch' or a Savant Sasquatch well.... I'm sure he would give it every ounce of consideration it is due.
